The Measure of All Things

The ancient Greek philosopher, Protagoras, famously declared that “man is the measure of all things.” Around the same time arose the psalmist’s rhetorical question, “what is man that thou art mindful of him?” These two statements — and the tension between them — will serve as the starting point for a reflection on the varied meanings of Humanism.
