Darwin, Consciousness and a Moral Culture

This is the birthday month of Charles Darwin. To celebrate, I consider one of the persistent criticisms of Darwin, that he could not explain the rise of consciousness nor the development of ethics. I begin with a quote from his 1871 book, The Descent of Man: “The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts.”
