When we remove the supernatural from the set of assumptions human beings have come to call “religion,” what is left? That is the question in this address. I also consider the work of philosopher Patricia Churchland. Her new book, Touching a Nerve, insists that functions popularly called “spirit,” “soul,” and “mind” are demonstrably functions of the brain. She says, “In general, fighting the truth about reality does not work out well in the long run.” Something to think about!
