Native issues have been recently highlighted by the large homeless encampment along Hiawatha Avenue. Dr. Joe Hobot explores the historical causes that brought the encampment into existence. Though generational poverty has affected the urban Indian community for decades, Dr. Hobot sees remarkable potential for this community through practices in the non-profit, public, and private sectors.Dr. Hobot is a descendant of the Hunk Papa Band of the Lakota Nation and is the President of the American Indian OIC. AIOIC was founded in 1979 with a mission to empower American Indians to pursue career opportunities through education, training, and employment services in a culturally rich environment.
