Ensure Help for Children & Families

Reporting child maltreatment to appropriate agencies is the first step to helping children and families get the help that they desperately need. Current bills in the Minnesota Legislature SF4037 and HF4793 make clear that the failure to report maltreatment of a child is a misdemeanor. A mandatory reporter who knows or has reason to believe a child is being maltreated or has been maltreated within the previous three years must immediately report the information to the local welfare agency or agency or department responsible for assessing or investigating a report. In addition, a parent, guardian, or caretaker who knows that a child’s health is in serious danger and fails to report is guilty of a gross misdemeanor. Finally, no public, private, or religious organization may have policies that prevent or discourage mandatory or voluntary reporting of a suspected or alleged maltreatment of a child.

Message:  Please support HF 4793 and SF4037, which make it a misdemeanor for mandatory reporters to fail to report the maltreatment of a child.
