The Clean Transportation Standard Act (SF2584/HF2602) proposes to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuel with a Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), but it is a false solution that is not possible with ethanol. A recent study from the University of Wisconsin “found that the carbon intensity of corn ethanol produced under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is no less than gasoline and likely at least 24% higher”. In other words, ethanol is likely significantly worse than regular gasoline in its creation of carbon. LCFS is like ethanol itself, out of date. Ethanol and gasoline have both been left behind by electrification. Electric vehicles (EVs) are already significantly less polluting and this existing advantage for EVs over vehicles with internal combustion engines will only grow as our electric grid continues to decarbonize. We must move away from fossil fuels, including ethanol, and decarbonize our transportation. The proposed low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) is not a climate solution.
Message: Please reject SF 2584 and HF 2602, the Clean Transportation Standard Act. It is not feasible for ethanol and fossil fuels to meet a Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS); it doesn’t work. LCFS is not a climate solution and will have negative environmental impacts by incentivizing more ethanol production.
