The judiciary and public safety budget bill being finalized by a bicameral committee of lawmakers includes a provision for expanded background checks and a red flag law. The background check provision would require a permit-to-purchase or a valid permit-to-carry in order to receive a pistol or semiautomatic military-style assault weapon. Under the red flag law, family members or law enforcement could request an a “extreme risk protection order” to prohibit someone from possessing or buying guns during a time frame set by a court. Any person subject to the red flag order would be required to relinquish their weapons but could get them back when the court order expires. The judiciary and public safety conference committee planned to wrap up its bill Wednesday. Then, the bill will need to go back to both the House and Senate for another vote on the changes.
