The Minnesota Department of Health produces data about child poverty in Minnesota. Statewide, the rate of children living in poverty is 11.8%. However, in some counties the rate has been as high as 40%. These numbers are unacceptable from a moral standpoint and threaten our state’s future prosperity. Thanks to action taken by the Walz administration and by the Minnesota House and Senate, beginning with the tax year 2023, families with children 17 and under may qualify for a Child Tax Credit of $1750 per child. Eligibility is dependent on income, and those with higher incomes may not receive the full $1750 per child. Families must file an income tax return to be considered for the credit, even if they are unemployed. Families can receive credit even if they don’t owe a tax. The tax credit is permanent and will be adjusted according to inflation. Results of the program will be tracked. A Columbia University analysis suggested the program could reduce child poverty in the state by up to 33%.
