Summer Solstice! Just the words alone conjure up images of lazy days at the lake, picnics in the park, and long bike rides. From the standpoint of sunshine, we have reached the pinnacle of the year: for six months, every day has brought just a smidge more brightness to our lives. Solstice is an opportunity to reflect on this, and ask: how have we used the ever-lightening days we’ve enjoyed? Have we, too, grown and shone? Take stock now, because the following day begins the half-year of gradually-diminishing sun – though, even as daylight begins to imperceptibly shrink, we anticipate the arrival of summer’s dog days, of tremendous heat, crunchy lawns, and moving activities to the more-bearable morning or evening hours. Whereas we often associate the concept of balance with equinoxes, solstices remind us that extremes come, too, and that while they may seem daunting, we can survive them, and even enjoy the gifts wrapped in their camouflaging paper.
The FUS Seasonal Celebrations Team invites you to celebrate this notable milestone on our path around the sun the evening of Friday, June 21, beginning at 6:30, with a picnic-style dinner (menu provided below), a seasonal skit, music, and drumming. Marking these memorable moments together is one of the ways our community flourishes, and we hope you will join us.
