Summer is half over-and many of our forebears paused in these early days of August to celebrate the long awaited first harvest of the year and revel in its abundance. Grains are ready to be harvested and berries and sweet corn are ripe for picking. Everyone is eager to enjoy the luscious fresh produce from our gardens and local markets.
We mark this ancient holiday by contrasting the simple lifestyle of first century philosopher Epicurus and today’s food industrial complex with an eye toward a contemporary humanistic response.
