In 1415 a church council declared the deceased bible translator John Wycliffe a heretic, banned his writings, and had his body dug up and burned at the stake. That’s one way of dealing with the past. Barring exhumation, how do we deal with the past, which is, as L.P. Hartley wrote, “a foreign country; they do things differently there.”
