Let’s Join the National Popular Vote Interstate Agreement

In two of the past six presidential elections, the candidate who won the most popular votes lost the election. Currently, most states use a “winner takes all” approach and award all their electoral votes to the candidate who wins the most votes in their state regardless of the overall vote across the country. Given this, candidates tend to focus on a handful of swing states, ignoring the vast majority of voters nationwide. We can change that by joining the National Popular Vote Compact.

How it works The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is an agreement among states and the District of Columbia to pledge all their electoral votes to the nationwide popular vote winner. It won’t take effect until enough states join in, but we’re closer than you might think. So far 15 states and the District of Columbia – representing 195 electoral votes of the 270 necessary – have signed on. Minnesota’s 10 electoral votes would get us closer to the goal! By pledging electoral votes based on the nationwide vote count, this group of states can ensure the presidency goes to the national popular vote winner and reflects the will of the people. Candidates would need to compete for voters in all 50 states rather than concentrating only on a few swing or battleground states. Since states have always been able to decide how their electors are chosen, a constitutional amendment to end the Electoral College is unnecessary. With the 2024 presidential election on the horizon, now is the time to act for a more democratic electoral process. There’s a bill moving here in Minnesota to join the National Popular Vote Agreement. We have a better chance than ever to pass this legislation – so please send your message today. Learn more here.

Message: The National Popular Vote Compact would reshape our democracy for the better. It would ensure that the president is chosen by the will of the people while encouraging candidates to engage with voters in all states. Please support SF 538 to add Minnesota to the National Popular Vote Interstate Agreement.
